Day 5 - 23/7/10

Today we made a mini Roman catapult.  It can shoot a rock (or any other things) to the enemy and it was used as weapons in ancient Roman civilizations.  We also had a competition of seeing which group's paper ball can shoot furthest with the catapult we made ourselves.  After lunch, we did PBL (Problem-Based-Learning) on new colleges in CUHK. We found facts and ideas from a passage in our camp logbook. Then, we set up a simple questionnare for CUHK students to find their opinions on this project. We later presented the information gathered to other groups. The group 2 and 7 were the best so they recieved gifts.  After our last dinner in camp, we came to a computer room and completed surveys about what we feel about this camp. We also assessed our group mates on how well they did in camp etc. Tomorrow we will be presenting what we have learnt in the past few days and what we have put in this webpage.

After these few days of learning, playing and enjoying, it is time to reflect on what we have learnt and done.  In these few days, we have learnt:

Hannah: I've learnt about the stars and planets. Now I know that there are 88 star constellations in the sky, but only 12 of them are in the horoscopes, because the people of the past thought that the sun turned around the earth, and the 12 constellations are in the "path of the sun". I learnt about the summer star triangle, the planets orbiting, about the different types of telescopes, how to use them, how to use the Stellarium application, and loads of facts about the sun, stars and planets. I have learnt a lot.

Wing Lam: I have learnt that the idea of constellations first came from shepherds from the Babylonian time.  I now know how to find Polaris and know about the star triangle.   I have learnt new facts about the sun like: there are four layers in the sun and we can only see the 光球层.  I have also learnt that satellites orbit earth in two different ways (同步卫星，近极地卫星), there are three types of sundials, how to use the program Stellarium and that there are two types of telescopes.

Calvin: I have learnt a lot of knowledge about astronomy in the past few days, I had a few talks and also a few visit to other places. I know that there are different constellations in the dark sky. In the visit, I learnt about some information about sea creatures. I am glad with this camp!

Angus: In this camp, I learnt many astronomical things. Now, I have more knowledge about space and meteorology, atmospheric phenomena, radiation etc.
