Brief Time Line of Charles Kao
1963-1966 – Charles Kao invented optical fibre, but he did not earn a fortune from it as the rights of Fibre Optics was to the company he was working for, Standard Telecommunication Laboratories, STL.
1970- Joined Chinese University and found the electrical engineering department.
2009- People finally realize the great affects of Optical Fibre on our life, and so he won the Nobel Prize in Physics
History of Optical Fibre
1880- Photophone, an optical telephone system was invented by Alexander Graham Bell
1840s- Swiss physicist Daniel Collodon and French physicist Jacques Babinet showed that light could be guided along jets of water for fountain displays.
Heinrich Lamm is the first to demonstrate image transmission through a bundle of optical fibre.
1930- Lamm reported transmitting the image of a light bulb filament through a short bundle.
1966- Optical Fibre was invented by Charles Kao
Optical Fibre
It refers to the technology transmitting information along a glass or plastic fibre by total internal refraction. It can carry much more information than ordinary copper wire. Electromagnet does not interfere it and the far distance that it could travel and the quick speed is a few of the main reason why people use it. The best thing is that less energy is loss during the process.
